Yesterday I posted a controversial Facebook status:
Why do some proclaimed Christians protest abortion but support war?
This sparked some discussion amongst friends:
Friend #1: "why are you picking on christains? why do muslims do the same thing? they support war and are against abortion too. it is because people are inherently full of hypocrisy... whether or not you subscribe to a specific belief."
Friend #2: "have you ever considered a baby a terrorist? has a baby ever threatened to kill you and your family?
purposley killing the inncoent vs. fighting against enemy combatants. sounds like a BIG difference to me."
Friend #3: loaded question ...
firstly, there are plenty of Christians who are pro-choice and anti-war - myself being one of them. There are two facets to my reasoning. 1.) empirical evidence suggests that the abortion essentially saves the mother's (49% of which are low SES teenagers) chances to have a prosperous life. You want sources? I got sources. ... Read MoreI am not convinced that the fetus can feel pain and know the fetus has no reasoning capabilities. Heck, I might even be on board with some suggestions made by Plato in The Republic (ok, no I am not...). 2.) Those same reasoning capabilities that the fetus lacks, ALL humans control. This is a simple concept, but one that is often overlooked. Also, Golden Rule outweighs any eye-for-an-eye belief that is in the old testament. In fact, why can't we just throw the old testy away?
Sure, there are some cute stories (Exodus), big dragons (revelations), and lots of incest(all over), but what is it contributing to our society today except for homo-hatred (which are mostly just misinterpreted) and outdated punishments?
Three very interesting views. What do you think?

SerendipiTea

Just thought I'd share one of my new favorite teas:
Fiji Green Tea from SerendipiTea
Not only do they have a cool name, but this pineapple infused green tea is genuine and smooth with just the right amount of sweet. Everytime I drink it I think of summer and the Bahamas. Don't know why!

Domestic Abuse Awareness
Everyone is talking about it now because of the well-known Chris and Rihanna case. I saw this though and just had to share, #1 because I like Keira and #2 because it really drives the message home.

Old School Nickelodeon
So for a few years now I've been asking everyone if they remembered this Nickelodeon show where a guy crawls through a log in the intro to get to this "magical world." Some people know what I'm talking about. I actually thought the show was Under the Umbrella Tree, but it wasn't. Little did I know, all I had to do was type "nick jr. show man crawling through log" into Google and I get my answer!
All those people who thought I was crazy, I'm not. The show was called Fred Penner's Place and watching this intro brought so much back!
Some other shows I enjoyed as a kid at Nana's (she had cable!):
Muppet Babies
The Elephant Show
Alex Mack
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Kablaam
David the Gnome
Salute Your Shorts
Care Bears
My Little Pony
Power Rangers (Go Trini!)
Bill Nye the Science Guy
*sigh* Good times....
Is it bad that I can define some childhood moments with television shows?

A Reflection on St. Patrick's Day

I went to Philly Saturday for the Erin Express. It was a lot of fun and very green. Three guys told me I looked like Isla Fisher too...crazy! I don't really see it....
But I saw Jilly!! I couldn't believe my luck! It must've been that Irish luck that reunited us so gloriously! I never thought I'd see a Boston crew in Philly around St. Patrick's Day!
Anyways, me being the history nerd I am thought, "What would St. Patrick say if he saw this craziness?" I mean, who was he really? Maybe a lot of you know this, but I don't so here's a short history about the man himself, thanks to History Channel:
It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 A.D. Although his father was a Christian deacon, it has been suggested that he probably took on the role because of tax incentives and there is no evidence that Patrick came from a particularly religious family. At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. (There is some dispute over where this captivity took place. Although many believe he was taken to live in Mount Slemish in County Antrim, it is more likely that he was held in County Mayo near Killala.) During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. (It is also believed that Patrick first began to dream of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity.)
He never rid Ireland of snakes (Ireland wasn't even home to them!) and the only reason corned beef is associated with the Irish is because they used that as a substitute for Irish bacon. They learned from their Jewish neighbors at the turn of the century this less expensive alternative.

I feel smarter already :)
